Learning to Work Beyond the Plan

Ammarah Sakrani · Neurodevelopmental Training Alumna · February 2026

Ammarah reflects on her first neurodevelopmental clinical experience and the importance of responding to the child in front of you rather than the session you planned.

Clinical work rarely follows a perfect script. In neurodevelopmental settings, the ability to shift tone, pace and activity in real time can be crucial. Peer sessions highlighted how quickly objectives sometimes need to change while the overall structure of a session is maintained.

The experience reinforced a practical lesson: clinical training is not only about knowing techniques. It is also about remaining responsive, patient and composed when the people in front of you are not interested in following the plan.

HEALTH VISION Care is clinical. It is also human.

Our community stories reflect the learning, compassion, collaboration and practical work that sit behind healthcare and welfare.
