IQ Institute of Neuropsychiatry
A trainee-led Community Based Project bringing together creative and group activities for IQ's inpatient community under clinical supervision.
The Community Based Project is a concluding component of IQ's Neurodevelopmental Clinical Practicum, giving trainees an opportunity to bring together what they have learned through a supervised group-based activity.
For this project, trainees researched, planned, prepared, and facilitated four activities with IQ's inpatient community. Each activity was designed to provide a structured starting point while allowing participants to engage at their own pace.
The trainee group was responsible for preparing resources, working within a budget, coordinating responsibilities, and facilitating the activities under supervision.
A shared rhythm-based activity using simple instruments and percussion to encourage participation, listening, and interaction within the group.
A hands-on creative activity in which participants used pipe cleaners to construct individual flowers, with assistance available where needed.
A visual art activity using foil and paint to give participants space to experiment with colour and create an individual piece.
A tactile activity using clay and decorative materials to create and personalise individual mirror pieces.
The group initially considered a larger number of activities before reducing the final plan to four. This allowed more time for participants to remain with each activity rather than moving quickly from one task to another.
Participation was also allowed to take different forms. Some participants worked alongside trainees, some interacted with others in the group, and some preferred to engage more independently.
The activities provided structure without requiring everyone in the room to participate in the same way.
Samar reflects on leading the project, what happened when the original activity plan began to change in response to participants, and how the experience shaped her understanding of flexibility and person-centred care.
